Artist Profile: Jacqui Morgan
Jacqui Morgan, a native New Yorker, received her BFA from Pratt Institute and her MA from Hunter College, CUNY. Her first visual incarnation was as a Surrealist and Psychedelic artist which earned her honors and accolades in the U.S. and internationally. She won awards at the VI and VII Warsaw Biennale, with gallery exhibitions in Warsaw Poland, Munich, Germany and New York. Posters of this period are part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute. Best known of these are The Electric Circus, The Joy of Seeing for the American optometric Association, Sansui Posters and the cover of Tages Anzeiger Magazine. In the early 80’s, Jacqui’s work began morphing with the Broadway Show Poster The Tap Dance Kid into a Dramatic Impressionistic Realism with exaggerated color, light and shadow. In time her use of watercolor became juicier and increasingly more painterly. In this mode Morgan did covers for Land’s End, Wine Spectator and Eddie Bauer Home. Clients included most of the Fortune 500, Yankee Magazine, Thai Airlines (Japan), Mikimoto Cosmetics and Yukijurushi Co. She has done packaging for BIC Corp, Nutra-Grain, Kelloggs, Stanley Roberts, Cuisine Cubes and a line of Naturals shampoos, conditioners and sprays for Alberto Culver. Morgan is also enamored of books and has illustrated quite a few, especially Science Fiction Anthologies. Recent one-person shows include Spring Studio, Society of Illustrators NYC, Marywood University, and Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois. Morgan has taught Watercolor Workshops nationally and abroad and is currently teaching at FIT. She is the author of Watercolor for Illustration, Watson Guptil and the video series Wet-in-Wet Watercolor Workshop. -
